Taiwanese semiconductor foundry UMC announced on July 29 that the company has joined SEMATECH (Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology), the US-based 300mm semiconductor technology R&D consortium formed by international manufacturers, according to Economic Daily News of Taiwan. Via the participation in SEMATECH, UMC is expected to tap advanced R&D resources for 22nm and smaller process generations. Currently in the 300mm wafer sector, UMC mainly engages in large-scale manufacturing of 90nm and 65nm foundry products, with 45nm/40nm technology being qualified and 32nm/28nm technology on the way.
